- .....still "reviewing" the book as I've recently purchased several on Mapplethorpe including the movie CD of his life with Sam Wagstaff. I did view the movie which I also recommend having. It just helps explain the man....actually both men to some degree. Mapplethorpe was a complicated man....or so it seems through the eyes of books about him and of course his photography. If you're a collector of all things Mapplethorpe this is one for the collection.
- I first became familiar with the work of Mapplethorpe through his florals -- something about them always spoke to me. They were artistic, dynamic and beautiful... and somehow sexy?
It was later that I was introduced to his breathtaking nudes, moving portraits and erotic photographs of the gay S&M community, and as I looked more, it all seemed to make sense. To me anyway!
This book features/discusses all the various phases of his work and evolution. There are hundreds of color and black-and-white images included, as well as insightful essays.
This book is a truly fantastic look at the life and work of Robert Mapplethorpe. - Great overview of his entire artistic output. Partnered with some great essays on his key eras.
