“Motley Fool makes investing fun again.”
BetterInvesting Magazine

The mission of Motley Fool—the multimedia financial education company cofounded in 1993 by brothers David and Tom Gardner—is to “educate, amuse, and enrich.” Their valuable, innovative, and entertaining investing book, Motley Fool Million Dollar Portfolio provides insight, pointers, and sometimes very unorthodox advice that can help any investor build a seven-figure portfolio by out-thinking and out-maneuvering the professional financial wizards on Wall Street. With a new introduction by the authors, Motley Fool Million Dollar Portfolio offers irreverent investing wisdom ideal for any financial market, even the most bearish.

"This book is great for first time investors. They now try to sell you on lots of products many of which you do not need. If you want to learn about doing your own investing be aware that it is nearly a full time job. If you buy and ignore the changes in the market you will probably not do well. But if you take advantage of the fool collective knowledge and keep up by reading the boards several time a week this will work."

  • I'm a fan of what the Motley Fool has to offer and I've enjoyed most of their early works. I've recently started to go beyond mutual fund investing and wanted a good primer to get back into the swing of things again. That's kind of what I got with this book.

The overall strategy the book outlines is pretty sound. They use actual companies to explain the concepts they're trying to convey. However, they only explain enough to pique your interest. Right when it gets you hooked they stop short of delivering the good stuff and throw in a pitch for one of their services leaving you feeling just a bit unsatisfied. It's a shame because when the book isn't holding anything back it a good and fun read. They just ruin things with endorsement after endorsement.

After the third chapter I couldn't help but feeling like I was wasting my time as this book is not giving me all of the information I need. If/When I subscribe to one of the services they suggest I really won't have any need for this book. My father-in-law subscribes to their Rule Breakers newsletter and enjoys it. I'll refer back to this book from time to time, but I must admit that I kind of regret picking up this one.
  • I had already signed up online, so some of this is rehashing, but a good overall look at various investment styles, their risks and rewards and brief overview of how one would go about finding good investments for that style. Excellent background on the crash in 2008, but unlike The Motley Fool Investment Guide, this book assumes some level of knowledge at least of some of the terms. But that's ok, now that we have Google and so many investment self help sites.
  • Very well written, holds your attention all the way through.

A lot of the ideas are good for beginning level investors, I used it for one of my Investment Analysis classes. If you are new to investing or want to learn, this book would be a great starting place. I don't think this will be entirely helpful if you already have a good grasp on diversifying and picking stocks based on financial analysis.

  • If you haven't heard of The Motley Fool I definitely suggest you check out their book The Million Dollar Portfolio. It's a great intro to their style and what they're all about. I've followed some of their recommendations for years and they definitely know how to pick stocks. Check out their website too - it's full of a lot of great information and other products.
  • I'd say this is a must for people looking to get into the stock trading world. I had to read it for a course in college so I wasn't new to investing but even as a moderate investor it still gave me some good ideas about trading.
I'd definitely recommend this to someone who wants to start making money with money. And there is never a better time to buy stocks than when the market is down (if you can wait).
Give this book a try, its a fun, fairly easy read and you won't regret it!
  • A good primer to jump into the stock market for non stock market professionals. Friendly writing. For any friends of mine, who say they're thinking about jumping in, I give them this book first. Not comprehensive, but will definitely help you get your feet wet. Read this one.....then read more (I'm sure the writers at the Fool would agree).
