I first read "Le Horla" thirty years ago and I still vividly remember both the story and the impression it made on me. Truly one of the scariest of short stories ever written, in my opinion, and not- theoretically- written for the "horror" genre. It's just that Maupassant was just a master in prose that no matter what he turned his hand to- whether satire or psychological portraiture or suspense or horror- he always seems to succeed. This is a free download on of a great master of the short story genre at his best. Highly recommended.
I'm reading this because I am still learning to speak French. The language is not terribly complicated, and the stories are entertaining. With google translate and the french dictionary included in kindle, reading is a pleasure, not a task. The title story is a ghost story. I loved it. There are other gems in here too.
